Below are the answers to some common questions people have about permanent makeup and the processes involved. If you have a question that isn’t answered below, please do feel free to call and I will be happy to answer your question.
What is permanent makeup?
Permanent makeup is also often referred to as semi-permanent makeup, microblading, micro pigmentation or cosmetic tattooing. It is a tattooing technique that deposits pigment into the dermis layer of the skin to achieve perfectly designed bespoke eyebrows, eyeliner or lips. Unlike traditional tattooing we work only very superficially in the skin using a pigment that breaks down gradually over time with even fading.
Who would benefit by having a permanent makeup treatment?
- Anybody wishing to save time in their daily makeup routine
- People who wish to look their best at all times
- Sporty people who encounter issues with makeup running and smudging
- Those with allergies or sensitive skin and experience reactions to conventional makeup
- Visually impaired clients who find makeup application almost impossible
- People with sparse or patchy eyebrows
- Those who have found their eyebrows and lip colour have faded over the years
- Anybody with a less than steady hand that finds makeup application troublesome
Is it really permanent?
Permanent makeup procedures are considered permanent because the procedure can leave pigment residue in the skin permanently. However, as with any tattoo or colorant (pigment) in general, fading does occur, requiring periodic maintenance referred to as a color refresh, colour boost or topup treatment. The rate at which this fading occurs is different for every client, and will depend on how well the treated area is looked after during the healing process, as well as the ongoing level of sun exposure to the treated area and types of topical products applied to the skin.
Can anybody have permanent makeup?
Essentially if you are 18+, do not have an allergic reaction to the patch test and are fit enough for the procedure (this will be determined at the consultation when a simple medical questionnaire will be filled out) then you can proceed and have a permanent makeup procedure.
Does it hurt?
This is quite subjective as every individual has a different level of pain tolerance. However most clients report a mild scratchy feeling during the actual treatment that completely stops as soon as the treatment is completed. I can apply a topical anaesthetic to the treatment area to minimise discomfort and keep you relaxed. I have had one client who was so relaxed she fell asleep during her brow treatment, so please don’t worry about the pain.
How long will my permanent makeup last?
Permanent makeup can last anywhere from 1-5 years. The length of time it takes the pigment molecules to gradually break down is determined by a number of factors such as:
- Your skin type – the oiler the skin, the faster the pigment disperses in the skin
- The saturation of colour implanted at the time of treatment
- How well the treatment area was looked after during the healing process
- Topical skin products used in your daily routine
- The general levels of exposure of the treatment area to the sun
In order to keep your permanent makeup looking in tip top condition, it is advised that you have it periodically topped up. I offer all top up appointments for clients who have had their initial treatment with me at 50% of the list price, if taken within 2 years of the last treatment.
How long will the treatment take?
Please allow 2-3 hours for the initial treatment. The majority of pigment placement will be carried out at the initial appointment, so the 6 week top up appointment should only last 1-1 1/2 hours. Prices are inclusive of all appointments necessary to achieve the desired result and all aftercare kits. There are no hidden costs.
Why should I choose Dunmow Permanent Makeup?
My clients happiness is paramount, I will listen to what your desired outcome is and work with you to achieve this. I allow plenty of time to perform each and every treatment and will use all the skills and techniques at my disposal to deliver this for you.
What is a patch test and do I really need to have one done?
A patch test is a quick procedure whereby a tiny dot of pigment combined with other products used in treatments are implanted into the skin on the forearm to see if the skin develops any adverse reaction.
It is essential, and I am legally obliged to ensure that a patch test is performed at least 24 hours prior to any treatment. Unfortunately any allergic reaction would mean you would not be able to have the treatment, however as Dunmow Permanent Makeup only uses top grade products, an allergic reaction of this nature would be very rare.
What should I expect from a FREE no obligation consultation?
All consultations are free and you are not in any way obligated to book a treatment on departure from your consultation at Dunmow Permanent Makeup. We use the consultation time to discuss and understand what you would like to achieve, shape, colour etc and address any contraindications that may arise from the medical questionnaire. It is at this consultation that we also perform a patch test and I can answer any questions you may have. Consultations can sometimes be hard to fit into your busy schedule, so if necessary I can offer these via a WhatsApp video call, although face to face is always best for me to make a proper assessment of the proposed treatment area and understand your specific needs.
Do you provide pre treatment advice or instructions?
At the end of the consultation I will provide you with a pre treatment information sheet to take home that gives you a list of do’s and don’ts. But as with aftercare, I am available at any time via phone or email to answer any additional questions you may have.
What kind of aftercare do you provide at Dunmow Permanent Makeup?
Aftercare instructions will be relayed to you at the appointment, and after every treatment a full aftercare kit is provided for you to take away that will contain a copy of those instructions for your referral. Should you have any worries or concerns after your treatment, you can call Dunmow Permanent Makeup and I will discuss your concerns with you and advise on the best course of action.
